Over the past two decades, the annual Sziget (“Island”) festival on an island in the Danube river in Budapest has emerged as one of Europe’s most successful multi-day musical events. And now its organizers are solidifying their reputation as one of the continent’s most technically innovative such firms, by pushing the boundaries of cashless payment across a range of different events drawing visitors from around the world.
Last week the organizing firm – Sziget Cultural Management – announced a deal with Cellum and another Hungary-based IT firm to provide a contactless payment solution for all its major events, including smaller musical festivals as well as a gourmet festival.
Under the agreement, the Cellum-Cardnet consortium will be providers of the “Festipay” branded service at Sziget’s events, which over recent years have made the shift to being completely cashless.
The Festipay plastic card provides a convenient payment instrument which is also highly secure, as the stored amount on lost or damaged cards can be recovered and transferred to a new card.
Meanwhile, from 2015 the system will be extended to smartphones, through which festivalgoers will top up their Festipay balance, using their bank cards.
“Sziget Cultural Management, with its innovative solutions, has been a very forward-looking actor in the international festival space,” says Dr. János Kóka, president and CEO of Cellum Global Corp. “And now we are developing intelligent solutions in cooperation with them that will further strengthen their position in the forefront of international festivals.”
